Choosing Hardscape Surfaces for the Ozarks: Patios, Walks, Drives & Decks

The term "hardscape" refers to all the non-plant elements of a landscape: walls, fireplaces, structures, and paved surfaces alike. This article takes a closer look at just one part of that picture, the surfaces you walk, drive, and live outside on: patios, walkways, driveways, and decks. These surfaces carry more weight, literally and visually, than most homeowners expect. They shape how a property is used, how long it lasts, and how it feels to move through. In the Ozarks, where terrain, stone, and climate all play a role, the right choice depends on more than looks.

Why the Ozarks Present Unique Considerations

The Ozark region has a few qualities that set it apart when it comes to hardscape planning.

Native stone is abundant here, though it varies as you move through the region. In the Arkansas Ozarks, native stone tends toward brown sandstone, while farther north into Missouri, grey to white limestone becomes more common. The brown river rock found in area streams and the crushed limestone used in native gravels both come from these same regional stone types. Limestone's porous nature is worth noting too. It's the reason the Ozarks are home to so many caves. That local stone is often a practical and aesthetic starting point, though it isn't the only good option, and it isn't always sourced immediately on site. At Applebury Place Hideaway, most of the mortared flagstone at the home was actually brought in from a quarry just across the state line in Oklahoma, chosen for its color to complement the house itself rather than being pulled directly from the immediate area.

The climate brings real freeze-thaw cycles each year. Water that gets under a surface and freezes will expand, and over time that movement can crack or heave a poorly built patio or driveway. Material choice and installation method both need to account for this, and proper sealing of stone and concrete surfaces goes a long way toward preventing the water intrusion that leads to freeze-thaw damage in the first place.

Slope and drainage are a constant here too. Many properties in Northwest Arkansas, Little Rock, Hot Springs, and the Springfield/Branson area sit on grades that require thoughtful planning so that water moves where it should, rather than pooling against a foundation or undermining a walkway.

One advantage of this region is more practical than aesthetic: our central US location gives homeowners here easier access to a wide range of material suppliers than more geographically isolated markets face. That means more options on the table when it's time to choose.

Material Options for Surfaces

There are more ways to build a durable, good-looking surface than most people realize. It helps to think of them in a few groups, generally moving from more economical to more costly.

Loose and aggregate surfaces. Gravel, crushed granite, and brick chips offer an informal, natural look at a lower cost, with good drainage built in. These tend to be good for light foot traffic paths or more rustic and rural landscapes. Their downside is that loose material shifts and migrates over time, requiring occasional refreshing. Epoxy-bound gravel solves that problem: the stone is mixed with a clear binder that locks it in place, keeping the look of loose aggregate with minimal maintenance.

Monolithic and poured surfaces. Poured concrete remains one of the most cost-efficient options and can be finished in a range of ways, from a simple broom finish to stamped patterns or exposed aggregate. Applebury Place Hideaway, in Fayetteville, uses an exposed aggregate driveway that settles naturally into its wooded setting, accented with mortared flagstone where the dry streambed passes beneath the drive. Concrete strength is determined by a combination of factors: the gravel base below, the type of concrete, the thickness of the pour, along with the size and spacing of rebar placed inside. The design of the joints placed in the paving help deter and control cracking and can be worked into the geometry of the overall design.

Asphalt is a durable, economical choice most often used for driveways. The flexible nature of asphalt allows it to bend and give without cracking when the ground below shifts. Asphalt, sometimes finished as chip-and-seal or rural asphalt, sets gravel into an asphaltic binder for a more rural, textured look that holds up to wear better than simple gravel. Chip-and-seal does migrate over time, and the top layer of gravel needs to be reseeded every few years to keep its surface intact, more often on steep drives or areas with heavy vehicle turning.

At the Antler Drive project in Greenwood, we used chip-and-seal for the driveway to fit into the woodland setting, while at The Dromborg Castle Grounds we used asphalt for the long expanses of drive leading into the site, transitioning to stone curbs and a concrete paver accent as the drive nears the home, offering more formality.

Rubber paving is another poured option worth knowing about, most often used around children's play areas for the fall protection it offers, and available in a range of colors. It's a seamless flooring made of recycled rubber granules mixed with a polyurethane binder, spread over a compacted gravel base. It shows up more often in commercial settings, but it's a viable choice for a residential play area as well. The more common and economical play surfacing options in the region are wood and rubber mulch, along with pea gravel. If applied correctly, these can offer similar fall resistance with several color choices, for spaces that are likely to change as the children of the home mature and their play habits change.

Unit paving. Natural stone, brick, and concrete pavers are typically installed in two ways. Dry-laid, or sand-set over compacted gravel, is the traditional approach, allowing water to pass between joints and the surface to flex slightly with the ground beneath it. Mortared installation, where stone or pavers are set on top of a concrete slab, offers a more formal, rigid, and stable result, often better suited to high-traffic or high-visibility areas. The patios of the Antler Drive Home use mortared stone paving on slab, and Dromborg's entry walkways are a mortared Pennsylvania bluestone that mimics the slate one might see in a Scottish castle.

Permeable pavers and permeable concrete fall into this category as well, both paired with proper drainage preparation beneath the surface to allow water to filter through rather than run off. This can ease drainage demands on a sloped site and help meet water detention requirements some communities impose, without giving up the extra real estate a retention area would otherwise require.

Elevated and structural surfaces. Traditional decking, in wood or composite, remains a strong choice where a home's grade or view calls for an elevated surface. Composite decking in particular has come a long way. Early recycled and extruded products were often criticized for looking artificial and wearing poorly, but today's composite materials, like Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators, offer far more convincing texture and color, along with considerably better longevity.

When exploring natural wood, pressure-treated pine is the most economical and common, while cedar and redwood are the next step up in look, feel, and price. Among the exotic woods, Ipe (or Brazilian Walnut) is the most dense and durable, so dense that it doesn't float, but it can be difficult to work with because of its hardness. The Clark Street Residence uses an Ipe wood deck on a steel frame, suspended over existing tree roots rather than disturbing them. Black locust is a regionally found native hardwood known for its durability as well, but it can be a bit harder to find in the lumber industry. Other domestic softwoods can be used in a thermally modified form that uses heat and steam to alter their cellular structure. These can be found under names like Kebony or Arbor Wood.

Less commonly known is the option to set masonry pavers on an elevated wood or metal frame, which can preserve tree root systems and avoid the cost of significant regrading, while still delivering the look of a paved patio. The Antler Drive Home takes a related approach further, using a steel bar grate to allow walking directly over a drainage area, along with "floating" stepping stones set to let water pass beneath them.

Matching Material to Use

Each surface on a property serves a different purpose, and that purpose should guide the material choice.

Patios are gathering spaces, so comfort underfoot and overall aesthetic often carry the most weight. Walkways call for attention to scale and texture, along with safe footing in wet or icy conditions. Driveways need to bear real load over time and hold up to years of vehicle traffic, while also setting the first impression of a property. Decks make sense where grade change, tree preservation, or a desired connection to interior living space favor an elevated surface over one at grade.

Surfaces around a swimming pool have their own set of priorities, where slip resistance and heat gain become defining factors. Additives can be applied over concrete to improve slip resistance underfoot. Kool Deck, a textured overlay applied to concrete pool decks much like a stucco finish, is one common approach, and it does reduce both surface temperature and slipperiness. We tend to steer clients away from it as a long-term material, though, since it typically begins fading and peeling somewhere between ten and twenty years and needs to be replaced at that point. Often, light-colored stone or concrete pavers can do the job with more longevity and gracefulness.

Where Design Judgment Matters

Material selection is only part of the equation. How a surface is designed matters just as much as what it's made of.

Pattern scale has a real, and somewhat counterintuitive, effect on how a space feels. Large patterns, whether stone, pavers, or concrete joints, actually tend to make an oversized space feel less sprawling and more grounded, while smaller, more intricate patterns can help a small space feel more expansive than it is. At Clark Street, large monolithic stone slabs are used sparingly and deliberately, rather than throughout, so their scale reads as a considered accent rather than overwhelming the space.

Surfaces also aren't just cosmetic. Every patio, walkway, and driveway plays a role in managing water on a property, and that role needs to be considered as part of a broader grading and drainage plan, not decided in isolation. The newer solutions, like permeable pavers or elevated paver frames, aren't simply material choices. They're engineering responses to real site problems, whether that's water, tree roots, or grade change.

Finally, when a property has multiple surfaces, a patio, a walkway, and a driveway, treating them as one cohesive plan rather than a series of separate decisions produces a far more considered result. That plan can do more than function well. It can tell a story and create an ordered experience, speeding a visitor up through one part of a property, slowing them down in another, directing their eye toward a particular view, or calling back a memory of a place they've visited before.

A Long-Term Investment

Choosing the right surface for a property is a long-term investment decision, not simply a style pick. The right combination of material, installation method, and design consideration will hold up to the region's climate, serve the way a property is actually used, and age well over time, creating a sense of place worthy and enduring enough to be passed down to the next generation.
